Lake Toxaway Waterfalls

Often called the "Land of Waterfalls", Lake Toxaway, located in Transylvania County is the largest private lake in the state. The lake covers approximately 200 acres and is surrounded by the beautiful mountain landscape of the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains.

This area is home to a series of beautiful waterfalls that flow through lush forests, creating a peaceful and picturesque setting that draws visitors seeking both adventure and tranquility.

While Lake Toxaway Falls are visible from certain spots, the lake itself is private and not open to the public. But, we've got some insider tips if you do want to catch a glimpse of the falls.

Visiting Lake Toxaway

Lake Toxaway is actually one of the closest waterfall spots to our luxury mountain cabins at Meraki Escape in Brevard, NC.

The waterfalls here are better described as a group of cascades rather than a single or separate waterfalls. These falls are set against a backdrop of dense forests, adding to their serene beauty.

Toxaway Falls

The waterfalls vary in size and style, with some featuring dramatic drops, while others are more gentle, cascading over rocks into clear pools below. The sound of the rushing water is a soothing soundtrack to anyone hiking in the area. The exact location of the waterfalls can be somewhat elusive as some don't have clear signage.

Named after the lake itself, Toxaway Falls spills and slides over some very colorful bedrock in a 240' change in elevation before the Toxaway River disappears into the forest. Many travelers don't even realize Toxaway Falls is right there as they drive across Highway 64 and it is often missed unless you're looking for it!

Did you know that in 1916, after a 24-inch rainfall, the earthen dam at Lake Toxaway collapsed? As a result, much of the lake's water rushed down the gorge, washing away vegetation and exposing the bedrock beneath the water. Then, in 1960, the dam was rebuilt and if you go to the right spot you can catch a glimpse of them!

How to see Toxaway Falls

Nearby Waterfalls

This spot is less well-known but is beautiful none the less and the area is not on private land! The trailhead for Raven Rock Falls is about 2 miles from the intersection of Cold Mountain and Panther Ridge Road and is absolutely stunning if you're in the Lake Toxaway area.

Best Time to See Toxaway Falls

While you can't simply visit Lake Toxaway, seeing the falls from a distance is worth it! The best time to visit is in spring and early summer when the water levels are higher, resulting in more dramatic waterfall displays. However, each season offers its own beauty, with autumn bringing vibrant fall foliage and winter offering a tranquil, frosty landscape.

The region also has a number of other waterfalls, hiking trails, and areas for wildlife watching. Additionally, the nearby Pisgah National Forest and DuPont Forest offer exploration of the Smoky Mountains' natural beauty.
