Best Gorges State Park Waterfalls

Here are some of the best waterfalls to see when you visit Gorges State Park in Sapphire, NC. Just don't forget your hiking and travel essentials, like a camera, sunscreen, and some sturdy hiking boots!

Rainbow Falls

Let's start with the most popular. Rainbow Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is one of the most popular waterfalls in the state! On sunny days, the waterfall's namesake is showcased, as many people see a rainbow in the mist when the sun is out, especially when the water is high.

This 150-ft. tall waterfall is impressive, especially after rainy weather that swells the Horsepasture River. The best feature of Rainbow Falls is the ability for visitors to experience the falls from the front, bottom, side, and top. The hike to see the falls is considered moderate in difficulty.

The cascades are perfectly framed by a lush forest and a steep, wildflower-covered meadow. The large boulders at the bottom of the falls provide an ideal spot for the water to crash into, creating a captivating mist.

Here's Why You'll Love It:

  • 150-foot cascade drops
  • Enormous mist clouds
  • Moderately challenging
  • 3.9 miles roundtrip
  • Dogs welcome on a leash

Turtleback Falls

When you're done with Rainbow Falls, continue on the trail upriver to Turtleback Falls. This famous cascade and natural waterslide is just a quarter-mile upstream from Rainbow Falls. Be sure to use caution and respect when visiting, and do not jump from the cliffs or get too close to the river's edge.

Stairway Falls

Sometimes called Stair Step Falls, this spot is often overlooked by waterfall-hopping visitors. Rainbow Falls is more popular when comparing the two, but Stairway Falls should not be overlooked! This multi-tiered waterfall is worth a visit and offers beautiful views and even a quick toe dip if you're careful!

The route is out and back, meaning you'll head back through the same trail you took to reach the falls. This is nice because you won't get lost after seeing Stair Step Falls, and there are three other falls located nearby if you are craving more!

Here's Why You'll Love It:

  • 50-foot cascade drops
  • Less crowded
  • 1/2 mile away from Rainbow Falls
  • 2.4 miles roundtrip
  • Dogs welcome on a leash

Hidden Falls

One of the most kid and family-friendly swimming holes in the area, Hidden Falls is located downriver from the popular Rainbow Falls. It's on the Horsepasture River, "hidden" just a few steps off the main trail, and many people miss it. Although the waterfall is less than 10 feet tall, the flat boulders and less popular setting make it a perfect spot for a picnic.

Upper Bearwallow Falls

Another stunning waterfall at Gorges State Park. This short and sweet trail offers a nice leg stretcher uphill to the viewing platform. On the way back, you'll be rewarded with a downhill descent back to the parking lot. Upper Bearwallow Falls lies just inside the north side of the park and is not one to miss while visiting Gorges State Park. While the view of the falls is not as up-close as other waterfalls, the journey is well worth your time!

Here's Why You'll Love It:

  • Short hike to see the falls
  • Less crowded
  • Wooden viewing platform
  • 0.5 miles roundtrip
  • Dogs welcome on a leash
